Joint viscosupplementation consists of hyaluronidate, a substance which replaces your normal joint fluid. This fluid decreases pain and inflammation caused by wear and tear.
What is joint viscosupplementation?
Viscosupplementation allows the joints to glide smoothly by injecting hyaluronidate,. Some people call it an “oil change”. Hyaluronidate is a normal finding in young and healthy knees. Unfortunately, it disappears as we age. To ensure accuracy and safety, Dr. Weiss performs the procedure under ultrasound guidance.
How long does it take?
Viscosupplementation requires 10-15 minutes, including preparation and recovery time.
How often should this procedure be done?
Three injections are given in one week intervals to complete the series. It may be done as needed.
What are the expected results?
Viscosupplementation is very successful in relieving pain in patients with mild to moderate arthritis. The benefit from these injections will typically occur two to seven days following the procedure. When combined with a routine of strengthening and stretching pain relief is often well sustained.
